Protein Atta: The Complete Guide to High-Protein Roti for Indian Homes

Everything you need to know about protein atta: what it is, how much protein it adds to each roti, how to cook with it and how to pick a good one.

By the 28 Grains team · Updated 17 Sep 2026 · 5 min read

Most Indian families eat roti at least once a day, often twice. That makes atta the single biggest staple on the plate, and also the easiest place to fix a very common gap: not enough protein. Protein atta is regular whole wheat atta that has been blended with plant-protein sources so every roti carries far more protein than usual. No shakes, no new recipes, no change in routine. You just swap the flour in your dabba.

This guide explains how protein atta works, how much difference it really makes, who it suits, and what to check before you buy.

What exactly is protein atta?

Traditional chakki atta is ground whole wheat. It is wholesome, but wheat by itself is only a moderate source of protein. Protein atta keeps whole wheat as the base and adds concentrated plant-protein sources such as wheat protein, soya and pulses. The result looks, kneads and tastes like the atta you know, but the nutrition label reads very differently.

At 28 Grains, our protein atta is made in Subhash Nagar, West Delhi, by blending whole wheat with plant-protein sources. It is 100% vegetarian and plant-based, which matters in a country where a large share of households do not eat eggs, fish or meat every day.

How much protein does it actually add?

This is the number that matters. Regular whole wheat atta has roughly 10–12 g of protein per 100 g. 28 Grains protein atta has 46 g per 100 g, which is about four times as much.

Per servingRegular atta (approx.)28 Grains protein atta
100 g flour10–12 g protein46 g protein
1 medium roti (about 30 g flour)about 3–3.5 gabout 13–14 g
3 rotis at dinnerabout 9–10 gabout 40 g

Put that in context. An egg has roughly 6 g of protein. A common guideline from ICMR suggests around 0.8 g of protein per kg of body weight each day, so a 65 kg adult needs somewhere near 52 g. Three protein rotis can cover a big part of that before you even count the dal, paneer or curd on the side. For a detailed side-by-side, read protein atta vs normal atta.

Why Indian diets need a protein boost

A typical vegetarian thali leans heavily on carbohydrates: roti, rice, aloo sabzi, maybe a small katori of dal. Protein is present, but often in small amounts. Many people only realise the gap when they start tracking food for fitness, weight management or recovery.

The usual fixes each have a catch:

  • More dal and paneer works, but you need large portions every meal, and paneer adds a lot of fat.
  • Protein powder is convenient but feels like a supplement, and many elders and kids simply will not drink it.
  • Eggs and chicken are not an option for vegetarian homes.

Protein atta sits in the middle. The whole family eats the same roti, and everyone gets more protein without anyone feeling they are on a "diet".

Cooking with protein atta: roti, paratha and more

You can use protein atta for everything you make with normal atta: roti, phulka, chapati, paratha, puri, thepla and even methi or aloo stuffed breads. A few small adjustments make the rotis soft:

  1. Add water gradually. Protein-rich flour often absorbs a little more water, so keep a bowl handy and add a spoon at a time.
  2. Knead well. Aim for a smooth, slightly soft dough, a touch softer than you would make for regular atta.
  3. Rest the dough 10–15 minutes. Cover it with a damp cloth. This one step makes the biggest difference to softness.
  4. Cook on medium heat. Very high heat can dry the roti out; let it puff gently.
  5. Store rotis in a casserole or wrapped in a cloth for tiffin, just like you normally would.

Who is protein atta good for?

Because it replaces a staple rather than adding a supplement, protein atta fits many kinds of households:

  • Gym-goers and active people who want more protein from home food.
  • Vegetarian and vegan families looking for an easy plant-based protein source.
  • People managing weight, since protein can help you feel full for longer.
  • Working professionals who pack roti-sabzi tiffins and want them to be more filling.
  • Older adults, who often eat smaller portions and may benefit from more protein per bite.

A note of caution: if you have kidney disease or any condition where your doctor has asked you to watch protein intake, talk to your doctor or dietitian before switching. The same applies if you are pregnant or managing diabetes, PCOS or thyroid issues. Protein atta is food, not medicine.

How to choose a good protein atta

The shelf is getting crowded. Use this quick checklist, and read our fuller guide to choosing the best protein atta in India:

  • Protein per 100 g: check the nutrition panel, not just the front of the pack.
  • Base ingredient: whole wheat gives familiar taste and texture.
  • Protein source: plant-based sources suit vegetarian homes.
  • Price per kg and pack sizes: a family of four can go through 10 kg a month, so bigger packs help.
  • Taste and softness: buy a 1 kg pack first and test it with your own family.
